Tips on Riding Motorcycles - Surface Tension

Balancing on two wheels as you make your way around corners is an inherently precarious thing, and so it's vital you keep the condition of the road ahead in mind when you're out and about, and are aware of the dangers you're likely to encounter in certain situations and environments.

Obviously you're going to experience significantly reduced levels of grip in the wet, and so your motorcycle riding should be adjusted to suit. Slow down; increase the distance between yourself and the vehicle in front; position your body more to the inside around corners (thus keeping the motorcycles or scooters more upright, with less stress on its tyre's contact patches); and avoid super slippery stuff like the plague - like metal grates, white line markings, cat's eyes and crack sealant. In built-up areas when it's raining, especially in the peak hours or around lunch time, watch out for hapless pedestrian darting across the road, and be particularly careful when it's just started raining after a prolonged dry spell - ie when road grime has had a chance to build up, and hasn't yet been washed away by the downpour.

Spilled diesel, petrol or oil are also things to look out for when riding motorcycles, but they're often not easy to pick up before it's too late. Any rainbow-coloured pools on the road need to be given a wide berth, and a decent build-up of oil can make water bead on top of it in the wet. Sometimes a vehicle with a loose fuel cap will leave a long trail of spilt fuel behind it - fortunately this is easier to pick up, so adjust your line to suit, but in general be wary of any discolouration on the road in front of you. Also be aware of where you're more likely to encounter these slippery characters - like at busy intersections, in industrial estates and on petrol station forecourts. When stopping at particularly slippery intersections, pull up either to the left or right of your lane, avoiding the oily centre, and put down whatever foot falls to the outside of the lane.

Loose gravel can pose a major headache too, and this is often a problem when a road has been recently re-sealed. Learn to scan the surface of the road ahead. You can learn to spot a dubious patch pretty effectively, and use your ears too - a road with loose stuff will have a different sound, as the loose bits get picked up by your tyres and are then flung against your guards.

Finally, take care if you're riding motorcycles anywhere near tram or light rail tracks. Ride between the tracks and don't cross them on too shallow an angle - especially when it's wet, when rubber and cold steel are a particularly bad combination. The rule of thumb here is don't be paranoid, just be aware - with a trained eye and an informed mind you will be able to effectively avoid the vast majority of road surface nasties as they crop up.

Can somebody write songs for my musical?
I am writing a musical, but I don't know how to write songs. Here is what my musical is about. Characters: Louis Cruz-18, openly gay, very fashionable (think Kurt from glee) Tony Shields-18, gay(not ashamed, not proud though), badboy(leather jackets, peircings, rides motorcycle), looks like darren criss Louis loves football captain, Owen. Owen loves his girlfriend, Candace. Candace loves the schools new transfer, bad boy, Tony. Tony loves Louis. The first scene is in front of the high school describing what goes on at school. Im thinking of a rock/pop song. Candace is making out with Owen. Louis drives up to school as Tony appears on his motorcycle. Candace breaks of from Owen and goes over to tony. I'm just looking for one song, then whichever one I like most, ill email you. Whoever I choose will get full credit for the songs in my musical. This is not professional, it's just for a fun project. Thanks and happy writing! It doesn't have to be original. Just a song that fits the scene.

Dual Sport into a Supermoto?
I am 15 and wondering if a supermoto bike is a viable option as a bike to ride to and from work next year. What I mean is, In Pennsylvania, what are the rules of being 16 on a motorcycle, I know you need a different license but can I get one at 16? I was thinking about a dual sport but I think a supermoto would be a better option for me, I live on a dirt road but I would spend more time on paved, winding back roads. What all does it take to turn a dual sport into a supermoto? New tires, a suspension tune up, But what are the other differences? I know that the seats are uncomfortable for sitting long periods of time but I would never have to go really far. My job is 5 miles away. With the price of gas and the truck that my parents have to let me use, I would prefer a bike. (It is a gigantic GMC dually, less than 10 mpg YIKES.) Above all, I want to know if I can legally ride motorcycle on road when I am 15 (With the proper licensing). Other then that any information about a bike that would be good for me would help. Thanks! Also what is it like to ride a supermoto on road? Do you personally drag your foot around turns like they do when they race? Oh yea, I am new to riding on road but I ride offroad a lot (125 2-stroke) Thanks! I know it would be cheaper to buy one but I love to build things, and many of the supermoto's I have seen are not legal in my state.

Can you still be a feminist if you're passive?
I'm 18 and I consider myself to be a feminist. Always have been, always will be. But I feel like I sort of contradict the whole feminist idea, because i'm passive, quiet, and usually have a hard time saying what I feel, or being heard. If I strongly believe in something, I will voice my opinion, but other than that I just can't be bothered. I like to wear dresses, look pretty ect. However, I still like camping, hiking, caneoing, riding motorcycles ect. I just feel like other feminists have this idea that women shouldn't have to watch their weight, and care about the way they look and be outgoing all the time. Regardless, I do care about what i look like and i'm naturally passive and non confrontational, I just want for everyone to get along. By passive, I mean i'm not agrressive. I can be assertive when I want to , but i'm comfortable being passive.
