Women's summer jacket choices are almost mind-boggling, from retro styles to menswear-lookalikes, in fabrics ranging from denim to silk. While the usual rules apply to choosing a jacket - consider your body type, fit, personal fashion 'dos and don'ts, ' and of course, comfort - certain jackets just make sense for summer. Here are five that do, and why.

1. Versatile Jacket Dresses Up or Down

Why? It drapes nicely over a sundress as well as a pair of capris, and its rich color compliments any skin tone and goes equally well with pastels or earth tones. It's a versatile jacket, but rather expensive. Think of this piece as an investment that's worth the money.

2. The Cardigan as Jacket

Is a cardigan a jacket? Oh, yes. Most designers and stores categorize cardigans as "sweaters" and also list them under "jackets" offerings. Others describe cardigans as "knit jackets, " but don't let the name throw you - a cardigan is a jacket (And it's my favorite!)

Remember, the details can make or break a jacket (or a cardigan). For example, this pleated cardigan from Elle (available at Kohls for about $45) can work as a jacket, but because of its asymmetrical accordion pleats and rose appliqu, its options are limited. (A monochrome sheath or tank underneath and black or pinstripe pants would be appropriate for almost any office, all summer, and could go out after work.)

What's better: This affordable, bright Rafaella cardigan (Younkers, $25) can double as a jacket at the office and a shrug at an evening baseball game. The classic crew-neck, button-front piece comes in summertime colors, with -length sleeves to show just a little skin - the forearms, on almost any woman, the most tanned and toned spot.

3. Cropped for Some...

The cropped jacket, most popularly seen in denim, is a must-have item for women in their teens and twenties - but few others, frankly, can pull it off well. Young fashionistas will get a lot of great outfits out of a short jacket like Decree's motorcycle-inspired pick. (Penney's, $20)

4. Or Sparkle in a Shrug

A snazzy shrug like this one from Newport News ($50) adds sparkle to dresses, skirts sparkle and even dressy shorts.

5. Wrap up your options
