Riding in the Rain

There is an aspect of motorcycling which many riders tend to overlook time after time. Having positive attitude about riding safety and preparation is often look upon as just another part of riding which they don't like to think much about, but inevitably must all deal with it.

Biking is not always a zilch. Sooner or later mother nature will get you. But it doesn't have to ruin your good time. With the right gear, proper technique and a happy attitude, even a rainy day can be a good day.

A number of bikers or motorcyclists like the idea of biking more than actual biking. A soon as the weather gets rough, the former breed of biker will tuck his prized possession nearly near the last year's Christmas ornaments, covered and locked cozy in the darkness.

But the one man road warrior like you self doesn't give a hoot about the weather. Well, this does not mean crazy old-school biker guy like your self is going to ride stupid, right?

Being prepared and having quality rain gear stashed in the saddlebag, tied to the rear seat, a helmet with pre-treated super-slick rain coating will do miracles on a raining day. So, don't be stingy with spending some extra bucks on rain gears that can actually come in handy. Even if you unexpectedly get caught in a deluge, you can always depend on the traditional method of staying dry: the garbage bag. Just rip or cut a hole in the bottom and wear it like a poncho. A Hefty bag works wonders if you can get past the banana peels and baby diapers. Once the sun pops back out, you can tear it off like Hercules, or an old stripper, depending on your taste.

Too many cases where tough guys cry to their momma when mother nature spits in their faces. Slowing down to 20 in a 65, trying to shield off using their hand and with their tortured and defeated look on their faces. Just do yourself a favor and ride with (or at least carry) a helmet with a face shield. Then rain will tinkle harmlessly off your plastic shield rather than crash into your nose like pebbles shot out of cannon.

As a matter of fact, every time before riding, take a minute to do a quick inspection of your bike. Even dirt hounds, road hogs like your self can get lax sometime and skip the routine check sometimes in your haste for adventure. Last thing you need is 200 miles from civilization when your steel-belted rear tire has stripped down to its belt. So, make a habit of check your essentials, even if you think this is unnecessary.

HIT AIR MOTORCYCLE JACKETS/VESTS

Made from high quality Japanese airbag jackets and vests, the CE certified armor protects the shoulders, elbows and spine while incorporating an air cushion system.

  • - If a rider is thrown from the motorcycle, the airbag inflates and protects the rider's neck, back, chest, sides and hip.
  • - Hit-air wear contains shoulder, elbow and back padding, as well as an airbag system (back padding is only for vests).
  • - The shock-buffering protection system is activated immediately after the distance from the rider to the motorcycle exceeds the activation distance. When the key ball is pulled out from the key box, CO2 gas is released into the neck, chest, body, back and hip airbags. These inflate within 0.5 seconds to lessen the effect of impact on rider's body.
  • - Even before the airbag is fully inflated (in 0.5 second), it is quite effective for shock buffering.
  • - After the airbag is inflated in full, the gas is slowly released through the gas release valve.

Knurled Rings

Machined from billet 6061 metal, this item is used in place of the original Motolight face ring. You no longer have to worry about misplacing your spanner wrench. The knurled ring lets you use your hand to get access to the lamp instead of the provided spanner wrench.

Night Riding Vision

The lack of visibility when riding has caused majority of motorcycle accidents on the road. The National Safety Council (NSC) confirms that 90 percent of a rider's reaction depends on vision and riding during nighttime has become a disadvantage to riders. Bottom line is that night riding just doesn't have the same thrill it used to be, as the abilities to see at night deteriorates as for many riders, it is common for riders to experience a high rate of accidents occurring between dusk and dawn.

In addition, with roads that are not generally lighted, many aging riders and drivers experience sensitivity to light (spotlights) at distance vision putting them in at risk, and is easy to see why it can not be a battlefield out there at night . Now, before you get all grim, there are ways to prepare for your trip once the sun sets.

Prep
A simple way to arm yourself against the evening is to prep your ride. That means giving everything a thorough scrub before you hit the road. Headlights, lamps, signal lights, windshields and helmet visors should be cleaned at least twice a week. Using halogen riding lights such as below can help you lower the risk of vision impairment.

MOTOLIGHT MOTORCYCLE LIGHTS

Motolight are halogen riding lights for use on virtually any type of motorcycle. Available as a caliper mounted, fender mounted or strap mounted system, Motolights come standard with a 35 watt halogen MR16 bulb. With its 8 degree beam spread the halogen bulb increases daytime visibility, making it easier for on-coming traffic to see the motorcycle, while increasing nighttime visibility for the rider. A 50 watt MR16 halogen bulb and a 50 watt MR16 amber bulb are optionally available.

Durable and easy-to-install, the caliper mounted system is designed for motorcycles with dual disk brakes. The fender mount system is for one use on single disc brake bikes with access to the fender mounting bolts on the trailing side of the fork. Both systems eliminate strap mounting and tuck the lights close to the fork of the bike.

Popular with law enforcement agencies across the country, Motolights are proudly made in America. They come with an industry-best 3-year warranty from the date of purchase and the company will replace burned out halogen bulbs for life, for the lights original owner.

Furthermore, if you ride with a full face helmet, make sure that the shield is scratch-and fog-free. A scored molding can create light refraction and two make four headlights look like; you won't know what's coming from. Keeping Fog Bay is a breeze with your favorite home remedy: Remove mask and spit on your helmet from the inside. Wipe your drool with a clean rag, and bam! Coating antifog. (Shaving cream has a similar effect.) There are various financial solutions available that do the trick, too-we like Cat Crap ($ 3.99) for the cool name. Bigger spenders can spring for Fog City Pro Shield antifog inserts ($ 17 to modernworld.com). Any of these are more effective than towed behind the shield your fingers to wipe the street.

Amber Bulb

Motolight Amber Lamps provide excellent night time vision in fog. The specially coated lens is designed to provide maximum transmission from the light source. The coating works by allowing only the wavelengths of light that produce the amber color to pass through, providing the most saturated color possible. The Motolight intuitive manufacturing process protects the coat from damage. Amber bulbs have a one-year warranty. Priced per lamp.
