Tips To Consider When Purchasing A Used Motorcycle
New motorcycles present a very delectable option for the motorcyclist. There really is nothing quite like being the first owner of a brand-new bike, after all. If your funds are a bit short, however, there's nothing wrong with choosing to purchase a used motorcycle. Used motorcycles, unlike new bikes, are broken in, can be had for sometimes ridiculously low prices, and can carry lower insurance premiums than new bikes, depending on the model you choose. While it is true that there are pitfalls to buying a used motorcycle, only you can decide whether or not that tradeoff is worth the couple of thousand dollars you'll save on the sticker price.
Used motorcycles that are sold by dealerships are often either of two animals: trade ins or vehicle purchases. The latter option can include bikes sold at auction, bikes obtained in the purchase or absorption of a motorcycle dealership, or bikes obtained through purchase circulars distributed throughout the community. In any case, if you are planning to purchase one of these used motorcycles, you should be certain that the dealership has completed a thorough inspection of the motorcycle, not only to be certain that it is mechanically safe, but sound, as well. To be mechanically sound, a used motorcycle should have no leaks when filled with oil, should have better than average tread on the tires, and start with no hesitation or smoking from the tailpipe. Of course, these factors must be weighed yourself, particularly if you are purchasing a vintage used motorcycle. Used motorcycles which were traded in should be checked over just as thoroughly. In the motorcycle world, there is no such thing as a "little old lady who only rode to church on Sunday, " Particularly if that "Little old lady" traded in her Sportster for a new Victory Arlen Ness signature.
Unlike new motorcycles, dealers of used motorcycles should be prepared for a licensed, insured rider to take the bike out for a spin. Pay attention to any irregularities in the bike such as brake feel, clutch, stuck transmission, or awkward suspension. Don't trust the dealership mechanics to get every detail right off the bat. They have a lot of work to do, and can seldom be expected to nail down every imperfection in a used motorcycle. When it comes time to make the deal, play straight with the dealership. You'll lose their respect if you try to lowball them too much, and they won't take you seriously. While there is some negotiation room, be aware that there is a floor beyond which the dealership would rather hold onto the used motorcycle rather than avoid making you walk out. Someone else will be there soon, after all, and might just end up looking at the same bike, willing to pay full price. Still, when purchasing a used motorcycle, be aware of what's around you, and don't be afraid to tell the dealership just what you're willing to pay. If they don't work with you, after all, chances are they aren't the Best Used Motorcycle dealership in town, anyway.
