Insuring Your Classic Motorbike

There's nothing quite like the wind in your hair as your ride your classic motorbike on a warm sunny day. However, typical motorcycle insurance may not be enough to cover your vintage beauty. When purchasing a policy, here are some things to look out for:

If you ride the motorbike, liability insurance is a must.

If your bike is on the road, you definitely want to have some sort of liability coverage. This covers personal injury and damage to property in the event of an accident. Different policies have different limits.

Museum motorbikes don't require as much protection.

If you never ride your bike, but merely have it out for show, consider a less expensive policy. You probably won't need collision insurance. However, in this case, be sure that you are covered in case the bike is stolen or is damaged due to flood or fire.

Discuss the "agreed value" of the bike with your insurance agent.

Since classic motorbikes are often worth more than contemporary motorcycles, it is important that you and your insurance agent discuss and agree upon the value of your motorbike. The agreed value determines the compensation available in the event of a claim. If you file a claim for total loss of the vehicle, then you will obtain the agreed value minus the deductible.

Be mindful of your deductible.

When choosing a plan, be mindful of the costs associated with basic repairs. Keep that in mind when choosing a deductible. You want to be sure that the cost of your deductible isn't the same as the out of pocket cost to repair the bike yourself.

Some policies limit how many miles you can ride your bike per year.

Since a vintage motorbike is not your primary vehicle, insurance companies often limit the number of miles you can put on the bike per year. Be sure this limit fits your lifestyle before you sign.

Your bike must be a certain age before it is considered "classic."

When insuring your classic motorbike, read the fine print. Most insurance policies won't deem the bike a "classic" or "vintage" until it is a certain age. This age varies depending on the policy. For some policies, this age is 25. For others it is 15.

You must document all updates and alterations to the vehicle.

The value of the bike is determined by the amount of money spent on parts and the cost required to replace parts if they are lost, stolen or damaged. Any alterations made to the bike should be reported to keep your policy up to date.

OK ill kick start this thing off, Surely its got to be one of the big four (Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki). I was thinking in terms of technical advancements over the years, likeability factor, coolness!. Can we all try and keep this a peaceful discussion people!. And to futher kick this off, i'd like to vote the Honda superdream 400n for first place! ( yes thats open to debate!)

UK: What is the best motorbike for an 18 stone, 6ft 3in person (i.e. me!) to learn to ride on...?
...one I pass my CBT, bearing in mind I'll be restricted to a 125cc engine? I've heard the Yamaha YBR125 might be a good choice? However, it doesn't have a particularly big frame... Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

what would be the best first motorbike for me?
i have alot of experience with push bikes, national level for three years (cycling) and i would like a 250cc. my question was "what would be the best motorbike for me" with emphasis on the me... i want something lighter rather than more powerful, i have riden motorbikes a fair bit but not enough to say that i am a 'rider'. i am farmiliar with counter steering and at my level i was best descender in the country (basically i know how to take corners) but not on a motorbike, im not trying to be cocky just give the motorbike people an understanding as to what would suit me; so what would be the best bike to make an easy transition from all my cycling habits to building up a good strong riding base for the future??
