How To Purchase Your First Bike From A Reputable Motorcycle Dealer
With gas prices soaring, people of all walks of life are flocking to their neighborhood motorcycle dealer hoping for the answer to all their problems. Without experience making these purchases, however, an untrustworthy motorcycle dealer can easily draw in unwary customers and fleece them in more ways than one. The key to making a purchase at a reputable motorcycle dealer is actually no different than purchasing a car- do your homework. Word of mouth is your most valuable asset when considering a motorcycle dealer for purchasing your first motorcycle. Ask around your neighborhood, or go and crash a local bike night. Walk around and when you see someone standing by their motorcycle, go ahead and ask them where they got theirs. Bikers aren't bad people, and we love to talk about our rides, so ask. Generally the people who attend these get-togethers are fun loving people who had to buy their first bike at some point, too. They'll probably have a lot of stories about their motorcycle dealer and which ones to avoid, so pay attention.
Ok, so you've chosen your motorcycle dealer, and you're on your way to check out their stock- do you know what you're looking for? If so, great! You're on your way to a satisfying purchase experience. If not, here are some ground rules:
1. Beginning motorcyclists should not choose a motorcycle which exceeds 900cc in engine size. Sport bike riders should be wary of anything over 600cc. A disreputable motorcycle dealer cares little for what kind of motorcycle they sell to whom, but in reality, large motorcycles are difficult to maneuver, require more finesse to handle, and are very heavy. Oftentimes, simply sitting on one in a showroom doesn't give an appropriate feel for how powerful and heavy these motorcycles are. One of the largest touring motorcycles, the Honda Goldwing, is extremely easy to lift off its stand, but carries the punch of over 1, 800 cubic centimeters in engine displacement. This is equivalent to handing over to your fifteen-year-old to keys to a Corvette- too much power, not enough experience. Chances are you'll end up in the ditch across the street from the motorcycle dealer. A reputable motorcycle dealer will sell you a motorcycle which fits your abilities. If they try to up sell you into something more powerful, saying things like "aw, you can handle it, " they are generally not looking out for your best interests.
2. Beware balloon payments. Motorcycle manufacturers often offer these as a way to make buying a motorcycle easy. With zero down and payments of between $50-$120 per month, it can look attractive, but in reality, you'll only get the special payment for a few months. After a set term, the payment "balloons" to as much as $200-$300 per month. While this isn't as much on the motorcycle dealer side, it is something to be aware of while you are shopping.
With that overview, it will be possible to walk into any motorcycle dealer and walk out with the perfect motorcycle for you- all it takes is a little planning and research.

What is the best 600cc Motorcycle to buy?
I have some experience riding and am looking to purchase a 600cc sport motorcycle. I am looking at used bikes and am looking for some around 3500$ (year 2000-2004 probably). I am sure all of these bikes have plenty of speed and handling for me, but which one will have the best gearing for day-to-day activities. I am looking to ride this to work on the interstate but also around town and will have to deal with traffic as well. Which has the best setup for all of this? I know gearing is different on all bikes, so what would work for me?
Thanks!

what is the best 600cc motorcycle to get for a first bike?
Hi everyone i am 5 10'' 185lbs and i just took the MSF course. I have no experience other than the course however, I passed the course andI am the type of rider that is more about riding safe than riding fast and pushing my limits. I have read on previous posts to start on a 250cc sport bike but don't want to have to trade it in a year. I would much rather get a 600cc sport bike and learn my limits that way. Does anybody have a suggestion for a lower hp 600cc bike. i have my eye on the sv650 and the fz6r, but am open to all suggestions. Thank you
